No Levy to Keep Criminals Jailed?
Sheriff Fred Abdalla, again, has put a levy on the ballot to help with funding of the Jefferson County Jail. Again, the levy has failed. Does no one see this as a problem? Okay Okay...I get it! I KNOW that NO ONE wants to have to pay anymore taxes than we already do, so we see school levies fail time after time because God forbid we have to hand over a little more money to help secure a good education for our children and now we can't spare the extra money to keep criminals in jail. Make perfect sense, yes? NO!!!
Fred Abdalla is a damn good sheriff and Jefferson County is LUCKY to have a sheriff who is such a huge advocate for children and who tries his best to get the crime and the criminals off of our streets. It saddens me that not enough people in Jefferson County feel that this is an important enough issue to vote in favor of? I do not and can not understand this mindset and yes I KNOW that times are tough, but I also know that my children are more important to me than being taxed a little more money to keep someone off of the streets who could and would do harm to them.
The morning after the vote, Sheriff Abdalla wasn't curled up in a ball somewhere whining over the defeat of the levy, he was knocking on people's doors and helping to get them to a safe place when their area had been flooded. The only comment that I saw him make on the news was that the people had spoken and he would not ask again. Very sad indeed! This is not a Sheriff who sits on his ass behind a desk barking orders while others do the work...Fred Abdalla is a very pro-active Sheriff and takes interest and pride in this county! I recall two evenings before this past Christmas walking through Kroger's parking lot in Steubenville and there he was, riding around patrolling the parking lot with Christmas music blaring from his vehicle and the windows rolled down so that everyone could hear it. That was a great feeling! (I'm quite sure that he could have taken vacation time to spend with his family instead of patrolling the area parking lots to make sure that WE were safe and weren't getting mugged two nights before Christmas)
My final thoughts for the moment on this issue are for those who didn't feel the levy was important enough to vote in favor of: when something bad happens to a member of your family or one of your friends, or even yourself simply because there is not enough money to keep all of the criminals behind bars...you have no right to bitch!
I applaud the comment on Sheriff Abdalla and the jail levy. I am ashamed of our community for letting this fail. There is far too much crime in this county and to think we can't even keep the criminals we have already caught locked up and punished is frightening. This is only inviting more crime to our area. Also, I believe our sheriff needs to be commended for being so visible on our streets. This definitely sends a message and adds some security to those of us who need to be out there every day. I voted for that levy and find it hard to understand why everybody didn't. Thanks Sheriff Abdalla for what you do! Some of us really appreciate your efforts.
Oh please, Abdalla's been whining about everything that's wrong with that jail since he convinced us to pay to build it. I voted for it twice, and also for the new pool and the new Harding Middle School. I also watched my property taxes skyrocket, and then there's the water bill. Give me a break already. Abdalla can lay off all of his dispatchers, since we're paying for 911, too. That guy has his hand out every year. Also, the fact that friends of mine suffered a theft and had to go down to the 'Justice Center' to file the report because he refused to send deputies to take the report doesn't exactly make me feel any sympathy for him either. Have you ever had any dealings at that place? They are the most incompetent, disorganized bunch of losers anywhere, and I live in Steubenville.

I am very proud to say that I have lived in Jefferson County all my life, and also have members of my family who work for Sheriff Abdalla; and he is an awful, arrogant, smutten person who has no business trying to run a jail. Oh please! You think he is a wonderful man because he blares Christmas music through the parking lot of Krogers at Christmastime?! Who's paying for that gasoline he burnt up to make his "political" appearance?? That's right...we taxpayers! Then has enough gull to ask for money from us to pay for his precious jail? Oh, or should I say "threaten" us by using these scare tactics that prisoners will have to be released from jail. LISTEN TO ME PEOPLE OF JEFFERSON COUNTY...PRISONERS ARE NOT BEING LET OUT AND THAT IS A FACT!!

I've had the same experience the other person had. It seems they don't want to mess with paperwork. Seems a common technique they use is "you have to come down to the center to file a complaint". And unless they agree to it, no charges will be filed. I even had a stranger chase me into my house, and when I called 911 they transfered me to the sheriff's office, and they told me "tresspassing is not an emergency, and hung up on me" They need to put a "Do not Disturb" sign up at the sheriff's department, they definately don't want to be bothered.
i do not live in jefferson county but when you start makin residents feel like they are no longer safe thats a dam shame all over a few extra tax dollars SERIOUSLY?
