Manganese Madness

Just recently East Liverpool is finally getting a much need air study. The main study is dealing with the amount of Manganese in the air and the effcts it may have on children. A doctor from the University of Cincinnatisays East Liverpool is one community in the nation that was deemed in the first percentile of worst air quality near schools but yet goes on to tell parents there is nothing to be concerened about at this point. Manganese has been an ongoing issue in East Liverpool for many years even the local miners responsible for mining the element have a term for it - Manganese Madness. They have reported issues such as having convulsions or hallucinations, mood disturbances and motor dysfunction, but apparently this is nothing to be concerned about.

Manganese has been identified as one of the 10 leading causes of work-related disease and injuries. Exposure to manganese has been linked to speeding up the onset of Parkinson’s disease and resulting in instances of manganism, manganese poisoning, as well as other serious conditions. The danger of manganese exposure is the inability to effectively diagnose the adverse health conditions that can occur because of the similarity the symptoms have to common, non-occupational conditions. In addition, manganese exposure causes conditions, like Parkinson’s disease, that is not associated to occupational illness.

Tags: East Liver Pool,Manganese

Category: Ohio Valley

Welcome to the New OhioValleyBlog.com

Welcome to the new Ohio Valley Blog. We had several great topics on the old OhioValleyBlog.com but it just became way to slow and unresponsive and it was time for a change. Unfortunately we have to start over from scratch but starting over tabula rasa style is not such a bad thing. Although we had a lot of content on the old site there were only about a dozen that really piqued the interest of Ohio Valley residents. We learned what sparks you interests and were actually shocked that several of the topics became very popular. It opened our eyes to what is important here and along the way we became somewhat of a shoulder for some Ohio valley residents. We let people speak freely here, we do not try to police the content like some sites do, and we want public opinion to be heard. We cannot guarantee all the right people will be listening, but others with similar interests and perspectives will band together and help one another out. One of our biggest topics dealt with sexual abuse and the Catholic Church. We were glad to offer a place for area residents who had been abused to voice their opinions and concerns in any way they felt were necessary. Hopefully we can continue to be a support channel for these victims.

Additionally we had several topics about area cities, conditions, politics and we made sure we tried to post about the positive in the Ohio Valley. Sometimes what we decide to blog about is negative and draws negative comments or in some cases a different perspective altogether; this is great. This is the purpose of a blog. To jot down what you hear and see around you, it is a log of your surroundings. These surroundings can include local news and events to personal experiences that need to be shared. You may have noticed with this new blog, registered members can create their own blog. Once you register (the register link is in the lower right corner) you will then have the option to create your own blog. I encourage individuals across the Ohio Valley, and even those who may have moved away from the Ohio Valley, to create their own personal blog and blog about what is important to them. Registration is free, and creating your own blog is free, we are 100% ad based and will not charge for access to this service, the information on it or access to the site in any manner. So let’s get started and talk about the Ohio Valley, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Category: Ohio Valley
