Just recently East Liverpool is finally getting a much need air study. The main study is dealing with the amount of Manganese in the air and the effcts it may have on children. A doctor from the University of Cincinnatisays East Liverpool is one community in the nation that was deemed in the first percentile of worst air quality near schools but yet goes on to tell parents there is nothing to be concerened about at this point. Manganese has been an ongoing issue in East Liverpool for many years even the local miners responsible for mining the element have a term for it - Manganese Madness. They have reported issues such as having convulsions or hallucinations, mood disturbances and motor dysfunction, but apparently this is nothing to be concerned about.
Manganese has been identified as one of the 10 leading causes of work-related disease and injuries. Exposure to manganese has been linked to speeding up the onset of Parkinson’s disease and resulting in instances of manganism, manganese poisoning, as well as other serious conditions. The danger of manganese exposure is the inability to effectively diagnose the adverse health conditions that can occur because of the similarity the symptoms have to common, non-occupational conditions. In addition, manganese exposure causes conditions, like Parkinson’s disease, that is not associated to occupational illness.
